I've had 8000, 9500 and 10'000lb winches on my Jeeps and all worked ok. I'm in the market for a new winch and looking at weights etc and the 12000 lbers seem to be not much bigger or heavier campared to the 10,000 lbers. Is a 12000 lb winch over kill for 2 door JK? My thinking is that I am not always pulling out my rig. There have times I've pulled much larger rigs than mine, therefore the added pull being worth it. Thoughts?

Not so much weight of winch but the physical size becomes the downfall. Bulky. I'd say overkill. A snatched block on a 9000lb would be sufficient in my opinion.

Size wise they seem to be about the same (Warn Zeon). Both the 10000s and 12000s weigh in at 75lbs. I think Warn just re-gears them(Gear ratio: 216:1 for the 12 and Gear ratio: 162:1 for the 10) to get the higher rating while maintain the same chassis for both.

Winches start and end with the 8274. You can throw the 70865 motor off the 15k industrial winch to pick up a little more pull, you could run a smaller diameter drum and pick twice the pull on the first wrap and extra line or you could use a snatch block. That said even with the original 2.5 hp motor I never saw mine stall and I've pulled some big rigs through some nasty holes. I haven't used this 7.8 hp motor in anger yet but it's a beast.

Ended up buying a 12000 lb X20 Smittybuilt........for a day......before I mounted it, I returned it, and got (almost) what I wanted. A Warn Zeon 10,000lb with synth line. Also allows me to keep my Warn remote control. So I'm happy. Now to mount it. :-)

I really wanted the Warn from the start. But bought the Smittybilt because of price. I figured screw it. Just get what you want and stop compromising every decision based on cost. Get what you want. it's only money, right.

WOW! Was that a PITA to install! Had to chop up my bumper to get it to fit. Still need to get the rear two bolts installed (tomorrow). And getting that winch line installed was nuts. But now looks good.
