I have a 1980 AMC 304 in a CJ-5.
It idles great, starting is a little rough. I'll be putting in a manual choke in it.
The problem is when I give it throttle under load it stutters and backfires.
When its parked I can rev the engine and it sounds great. The engine and looks stock, no performance upgrades.
It has a Motorcraft 2 barrel carb.

Any ideas of what I need to do to get it going smooth? I have never had a carburated engine before.

2 main things with an amc v8

The ignition sucks. An upgrade to an hei is worth every penny. Or look into running ford v8 cap and rotor, and upgrade your coil.

That is a great carb, but is prone to dirt. Pull the top off, clean it really good. Dirt collects in the bowl and jets. Check that the accelerator pump is not leaking. Any parts store has a rebuild kit for around $20.

Give your vacuum lines a quick once over.

Hope this helps

Thanks Steve, after getting the wires figured out the old 304 is running smooth now. I did the ford upgrade.
