Calling all mechanics my jeep won't start

Postby Eagle Jeeper » Mon Mar 08, 2010 7:06 pm

Hey guys my AMC 360 in my CJ won't start. I was on the Feb open run and other than the fuel filter plugging it ran great. I had to yank the filter and buy pass the return line in order to get out of the bush thats the only thing that has been different than usual. It sat on the trailer for 2-3 weeks and when I went out to start it cranked and cranked with nothing. I dumped some gas down the carb to get her going because its notorious for draining the bowl dry and it didn't even fire then. So I brought it into the shop and check that I still had power to the distributer and yes it was good. I cranked on it a bit more, filled the bowl manually and cranked some more. It coughed a few times and then ran for a few seconds but didn't sound good or smell good at all.

Any suggestions from here I was thinking I might have to check the timing maybe it bumped in tow I don't know.

Thanks

Ignition and fuel. Are you getting spark. ( Ignition module ) plug wires tight. I think the fuel system should be OK. Try cranking it with the line off the fuel filter, make sure you're getting gas. That's all I can think of.

not sure what year your running there but on some 72 -80 ish 360s had a not sure right word for but ill call it a starter resistor it is usually mounted on the firewall and is porclain rectangle about 2.5"long and1.25" wide wire going in and wire going out this always went out on a power wagon of mine after sitting wet for a while ....just a thought...

Ballast resistor like the Cherokee and Comanche's. You can bypass them to check if it is the problem.

I didn't pull a plug but I hooked up a volt meter to the out put on the coil wire and had lots of current. I am working by myself so its hard to crank and look for spark. It might be the ignition mod. but I don't have a spare to check it left on Saturday with the J10. Figures I had that mod for about 5 years and day after it goes I need it. Yeh pulled the fuel line off and cranked but no fuel. Thats no surprise though it never did when just cranking. But it should fire with gas down the carb. I think moduale. I cut the old fuel filter open and it looked fine not noticable plugged. I might have fuel pump problems too but again it should fire with gas down the carb.

Fuel pump was screwed. Replaced it and runs as good as ever.
